Rising Hollywood screenwriter Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is blacklisted in the early 1950s Red Scare. Following a drunken car accident, he wakes with amnesia near the small town of Lawson, Calif., where the residents mistake him for Luke Trimble, a local boy declared missing in action during World War II. As Peter helps Luke's father (Martin Landau) and high school sweetheart (Laurie Holden) reopen the town's sole movie theater, questions arise about his true identity and motivations.

The Majestic lijkt de magische sfeer van regisseur Darabonts The Shawshank Redemption te willen combineren met die van Jim Carrey's The Truman Show, maar houdt de spagaat ondanks twinkelende beelden niet vol en plonst in het ietwat non-emotioneel melodramatische midden. Carrey speelt een Hollywood scenarist in de jaren vijftig. Als hij van communisme wordt beschuldigd, rijdt hij dronken een afgrond in. De volgende dag blijkt hij aangespoeld in een stadje waar men hem aanziet voor de sinds WO II vermiste Luke. Luke's pa (Landau) is zó blij dat hij de vergane bioscoop The Majestic heropent.
