Born February 25, 1932 in Radford, Virginia, he was the son of the late Charles Washington Mottesheard, Sr. and Virginia Allison Mottesheard. Mr. Mottesheard owned and operated Lee Hi Gulf Station in Radford for 27 years until his retirement.
In his later years, he farmed in Draper. He was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served during the Korean War as a Medic and was wounded in action. He received the Korean Service medal, a Purple Heart and a Bronze Service Star. He was a member of the Radford V.F.W. Post the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.
He was also a member of the First Christian Church, Radford. WHITLOCK, Ralph Carlyle, of Blacksburg, died Thursday, April 10, 2003 at his home. He was born in Montgomery County, Va. on November 20, to the late Henry Byrd and Rosa Turner Whitlock and was also preceded in death by a sister, Hortense Scott. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the U.S. Navy's 37th Battalion Seabees as a Chief Petty Officer in the Pacific Theater.

Noel Fox, a former bass singer with the Oak Ridge Boys who became a power in the music business, died at a Nashville hospital after surgery following a series of strokes. He was 63. Fox died Thursday, according to longtime band manager Jim Halsey.
Fox was born and raised in Columbia, about 40 miles south of Nashville. He sang with the Oak Ridge Boys for five years before leaving in 1972 for a Nashville music business career that included booking, talent management and publishing. In 1978, Fox began managing the Oak Ridge Boys' publishing entity, Music Inc. Johnson Sons, Johnson took on the job of Wythe County planner. By PAUL DELLINGER THE ROANOKE TIMES WYTHEVILLE Robert Eley Johnson has been called a circuit rider for drumming up support to create what is now Wytheville Community College. Former college president William Snyder came up with that description for Johnson's work in 1990, when the college conferred its first honorary degrees in humane letters. Johnson headed a steering committee that was successful in creating a two-year branch of Virginia Tech in Wytheville, and helped argue for it in 1961 before the State Council of Higher ROBERT ELEY JOHNSON 1919 2003 Education. In the years that followed, Johnson often appeared before Wytheville Town Council and other governing bodies as he kept pushing for the college.
The effort was successful and, with the coming of the state system of community colleges, the branch became one of the first community colleges in Virginia. The branch college began in temporary rented quarters in downtown Wytheville before moving to its permanent site on East Main Street. As a community college today, it takes students from Wythe, Bland, Smyth, Carroll and Grayson counties, and the city of Galax. Johnson, 84, died Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested gifts to the Wytheville Community College Scholarship Fund or St.
John's Episcopal Church in Wytheville, where Johnson was an active, lifelong member. Last June, the Johnson family celebrated his and his wife Jane's 60th wedding anniversary with a $100,000 gift to the college in their honor. Johnson also received the college's annual Distinguished Service Award in 1991, and had his name placed on Wytheville's Civic Wall of Honor in 1993. He served on the college's board from 1969 to 1978. Johnson was a Wytheville businessman, and was president of R.P.
Johnson Sons which sells golf cars and carts in Wytheville. When he retired ras president of that company, he took on the job of Wythe County planner. EARLY, Joseph Howard MD, 78, passed away at his home on Sunday, April 13, 2003. A lifelong resident of Hillsville, he was born September 6, 1924. He was the only son of J.Howard andMyrtle Worrell Early. An infant son, James Wygal Early, preceded him in death. Dr.
Early graduated at sixteen from Hillsville High School. He attended Roanoke College for two years and then transferred to Emory and Henry College under the V12 Program at the outbreak of World War II. He graduated from George Washington University School of Medicine in 1948 and interned at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md. He returned home to Hillsville and opened his medical practice on August 17, 1949. During the Korean War, he was called back to the Navy as a phsician from 1953 through 1955.
After the war he came back to Hillsville, where he practiced medicine until retiring in 1992. Dr. Early was president of the Southwest Virginia Medical Society in 1967, a member of the Virginia Professional Standards Board and a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He also served as a delegate to the American Medical Association from the Medical Society of Virigina for six years. In 1998 he was elected an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Medical Society of Virginia for his many years of service to the medical community.
Dr. Early was also an FAA Medical Examiner as well as the Carroll County Medical Examiner for forty-two years. In addition, Dr. Early was active in the advancement and prosperity of Carroll County. He was a founder, Charter Director and Vice President of the Bank of Carroll that was opened in 1971.
He was also instrumental in the construction of the Twin County Airport and served on the Airport Commission from 1964 until 1991. In the last several years, Dr. Early has worked to establish the Carroll Wellness Center to improve the health of the citizens of Caroll County. Dr. Early is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Chrlotte Taylor Ridge Early; children, Susan Early Otero, M.D.
and her husband Juan Pablo Otero, Deborah Early Hunter and her husband Robert Clarke Hunter, India Early Keith and her husband, Graeme M. Keith, Lt. Col. Joseph Howard Early, IlI and his wife Susan Murphy Early and Jubal Anderson Early and his wife Katherine Currence Early. He was one of the founders of the Wytheville Chamber of Commerce, which now includes Wythe and Bland counties, and served as its first secretary. He was the first president of Wythe County Community Hospital when it was built in Wytheville. He was a longtime secretary and treasurer for the Smyth-Wythe Airport Commission, which oversaw Mountain Empire Airport located near the border between the two counties.
He was a charter member of the Wytheville Recreation Commission, Wythe County Community Concert Association and Wythe County United Fund, a past Wytheville Rotary Club president and chairman of the Wythe County Bicentennial Committee when the county celebrated its 200th birthday in 1990. He was named grand marshal for that year's Wytheville-Wythe-Bland Chamber Christmas parade that year. Johnson attended the University of Missouri and the University of North Carolina. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Authorities have charged three employees at a home for troubled youth in South Carolina with homicide after a 9-year-old Newport News, boy died while being restrained.
Josette Lee Pearson, 35, of Moncks Corner, and Robyn Nutzman, 23, of North Charleston, are accused of restraining Jamal Odom while William Brightharp, 39, also of North Charleston, lay on top of the boy for seven minutes, according to prosecutors. A videotape of the March 23 incident shows the 105-pound Jamal unable to move underneath the 200-pound man, prosecutor Blair Jennings said. A preliminary autopsy report lists the cause of death as positional asphyxiation, which can result from restraint. All three employees were arrested in late March and charged with homicide by child abuse. The workers are free on bond pending a May 2 probable cause hearing.
Lawyers for the employees and the New Hope Treatment Center maintain that the employees followed proper procedure to mOD restrain a violent patient. "This is a normal medical technique that is used widely in the psychiatric said David Haller, a Mount Pleasant lawyer. "Just because a medical procedure goes wrong doesn't mean a crime has been committed." South Carolina authorities said the incident occurred when Jamal struck a staff member at the center, while walking down the hallway. He tried to run away, but the three employees caught him and restrained him. Jamal's family in Newport News has declined comment.
Pastor's sermon sets record SHAWSVILLE A Shawsville minister was taking a well-earned sleep Sunday after delivering a world record-setting sermon lasting 51 hours and 30 minutes. The Rev. Norman Ramsey began his sermon Friday morning and ended it before the 11 a.m. Palm Sunday service at White Memorial United Methodist Church. The previous record, set by a vicar in England, was a sermon in excess of 40 hours, according to the Guinness Book of Records.
Now, Ramsey will be the record holder in the book's next edition. The church took pledges from people willing to sponsor a block of time or to pledge an amount for the entire sermon. It also sold quarts of Brunswick stew, made by parishioners, in the church basem*nt during the sermon, along with desserts. Ramsey sold CDs and audiotapes of religious songs he had written and recorded. The money was to go for church programs and other religious or charitable organizations, but the totals were not completed Sunday SO it was not known how much was raised.
Under Guinness rules, Ramsey was allowed a 15-minute break every eight hours. The entire sermon had to be videotaped, and there had to be people in the audience the entire time. Church members signed up in advance to make sure the whole time would be covered. PAUL DELLINGER..
