A year after his last appearance in Maine, world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma will take the stage at Merrill Auditorium in Portland on Oct. 20.
The show, presented by Portland Ovations, is called “We Are Water: A Northeast Celebration.”
Although the specific music has not yet been revealed, the show will be unique. It is only being performed twice, once in Portland and once at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.
Ma will be joined by Wabanaki musicians Jeremy Dutcher, Mali Obomsawin and Chris Newell. Dutcher is a Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) member of the Tobique First Nation, Obomsawin is a member of the Abenaki First Nation at Odanak, and Newell is a member of the Passamaquoddy First Nation.

The show is described as “an evening of songs and stories to ask how the waters of the North — from Kwenitekw (the Connecticut River) to Supeq (the ocean) and Punkik (the Arctic North) — connect us to each other and to our past, present and future. This special event, rooted in wisdom and inspired by a dream for the future, invites us to come together as a community and find hope for a changing planet.”
Tickets are available for Portland Ovations members only through June 26. General public sale starts on June 27 at porttix.com. Tickets range from $90-$500.
Memberships start at $35 and members can purchase up to six tickets to the Oct. 20 show. For membership info, head to portlandovations.org.
